Norway Tax Changes for 2026
A short summary of how trinnskatt and trygdeavgift brackets were adjusted this year.
Norway's step tax (trinnskatt) and national insurance contribution (trygdeavgift) thresholds are updated annually, usually as part of the national budget process in the autumn before the tax year begins. These brackets, together with the base tax rate (fellesskatt) and your personal allowance (personfradrag), are what determine how much tax is withheld from each paycheck.
For most employees, the practical effect of these annual adjustments is small from month to month, but it matters if you're comparing a job offer, negotiating a raise, or budgeting for the year ahead — a raise that pushes you into a higher trinnskatt bracket means the extra income is taxed at a higher marginal rate, even though your average rate barely moves.
Trygdeavgift (national insurance) is calculated separately from step tax, at a flat percentage of your income above a minimum threshold, and funds Norway's social security system — including sick pay, parental leave, and pension contributions.
