VAT Filing Deadlines Across Europe

A general overview — always confirm exact dates with your local tax authority.

Most EU countries require VAT-registered businesses to file returns monthly or quarterly, with deadlines typically falling in the month following the reporting period. Norway's MVA-melding (VAT return) follows a similar bi-monthly pattern for most businesses, with a handful of exceptions for smaller companies that can file annually.

Filing frequency usually depends on your annual turnover — smaller businesses are often allowed to file less often, which reduces admin work but means each return covers a larger amount. It's worth checking your specific threshold with your local tax office, since these limits are adjusted periodically and differ from country to country.

Late filing typically triggers a fixed penalty plus interest on any VAT owed, and persistent late filing can trigger closer scrutiny in future periods — so even if the amount is small, filing on time (or filing a "nil" return if you had no VAT activity) is usually worth the few minutes it takes.

Once you know the amount due, the VAT Calculator can help you quickly add VAT to a net price, or work backwards from a gross price to find out how much VAT is included.
